 #2024-A sense of relief
Ana Mendieta-"Traces"-1974

"Art That Looks at What Women See"
By:
“They created a shift, a change in perspective, from being the model, the person a painter is looking at, to being the painter herself.”
"Overlooked No More: Ana Mendieta, a Cuban Artist Who Pushed Boundaries"
By: Monica Castillo
Quote
1. “if not naturally fearless,” Mendieta “used fear well, transmuting a profound sense of psychological and cultural displacement into an experience of merging with the natural world and its history through art.”
"Way of Seeing"
By: John Berger
Quote
1. "A man’s presence is dependent upon the promise of power which he embodies. If the promise is large and credible his presence is striking"
Response
1. What I took from this quote was how a man shows depends on what is at stake. If what is at stake is powerful enough then a man's presence is very powerful.  Thinking about the "Male Gaze" depending on the way a man looks at a woman, it can either be disappointment or approval.
2. "a woman’s presence expresses her own attitude to herself and defines what can and cannot be done to her".
Response
1.This remark made me realize that women have a different kind of gaze than males do, which means that although we exhibit ourselves in a totally different way than men, women may also have incredibly alluring gazes.
Quote
3. "Her presence is manifest in her gestures, voice, opinions, expressions, clothes, chosen surroundings, taste – indeed there is nothing she can do which does not contribute to her presence".
Response
3. This remark made me realize that, as a woman, everything matters—including the way that women talk, dress, and carry themselves. How people view women is influenced by everything about them.
Quote
4. "One might simplify this by saying: men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at".
Response
4. This quote made me realize that males dominate the gaze, are active and living, and that women exist primarily for the sake of desire and beauty. Women absorb the gaze as it is directed towards them.
