Ways of seeing
“To be born a woman has been to be born, within an allotted and confined space, into the keeping of men.”
This quote hit me hard. I think it’s very accurate and describes the standards that women must face. The male gaze and misogyny forces women into boxes from the day that they're born til the day they die. If we want to break free from those boxes we must risk judgment and scrutiny.
“In the average European oil painting of the nude the principal protagonist is never painted. He is the spectator in front of the picture and he is presumed to be a man.”
I liked this quote because it truly embodies the male gaze. The fact that even though the subject of old European art is the woman, she is not the point of the image. It’s simply her body and the exploitation of her image for male pleasure.
