NY Times: Being Marina Abromovich
“ Except she’ll say: “I’m going to work.” When she wakes up, she will have had a dream. And then she’ll make her work.”
-I relate to this very much, and not solely in the sense of our physical reality where we dream for peace and equality for example and work to create this in policy. But, I feel like sometimes it can even start smaller than that, where I would literally dream up paintings I wanted to draw or stories I wanted to write when I was younger. & I think it’s powerful to still have access to that as an adult and make something something out of it.
“The first step is to get an idea. Not an easy idea but one that makes me go, “Oh my god. No, no, no, no.” An idea that gets stuck in my stomach. Then, I get obsessed and, finally, I say, “OK, I’m going to do it.” That moment of decision is very important. Then I do it. But a piece always starts with an idea that I don’t like — something I’m afraid of — and going into the unknown.”
-I relate to this very much as well as an artist, and I believe that many others do too. To start something new can be daunting because in our heads we can already see the finished projects, and it becomes the process of getting there. Sometimes I even feel like this is where very much of art block can come from because we turn ourselves off from even getting into this process.
